Ready to Scale? Three Things You Need to Know About the Scale AI Funding program

Artificial intelligence is evolving fast, transforming industries from healthcare and logistics to retail and finance. Canada is keeping pace through Scale AI, an independent supercluster that funds collaborative projects focused on AI adoption or commercialization across sectors. Read on to discover its key requirements.

Background

Scale AI is Canada’s national AI innovation hub, investing in collaborative, industry-led projects that apply artificial intelligence to real-world value chains. Their mission is to accelerate AI deployment from concept to commercial impact.

Whether your company aims to adopt AI solutions to improve operations, productivity, or decision-making (i.e., adoption) or build an AI product, platform, or technology that you will sell to customers (i.e., commercialization), Scale AI is a strong starting point. A $30M funding window is open through 2026, supporting projects that strengthen supply chains, improve productivity, and scale AI solutions.

Why apply for Scale AI funding?

Scale AI is one of the most generous AI funding programs in Canada. Eligible organizations can receive up to 40% reimbursement on eligible project costs. Moreover, you can get access to networking events and community resources by signing up for free.

Is there a catch? Scale AI Membership Fees Explained

Scale AI charges a membership fee only after your project is approved:

  • $2,000 + 5% of Scale AI’s investment (capped at $75,000) for industry
  • $1,000 for academic partners

Given that Scale AI’s funding for each project typically ranges from $1M to $5M, this amounts to a modest, “no catch” fee relative to the potential return on investment.

Key eligibility requirements

Scale AI co-invests alongside government and private equity and not necessarily the applicant company. To qualify, your project must:

  1. Include at least one Canadian SME
  2. Be collaborative, involving multiple partners
  3. Deliver real-world AI applications in value chains (e.g., logistics, manufacturing, retail, supply chain optimization).

Once approved, funding can be used for AI development costs. These may include: employee wages, contractor and consultant fees, equipment, data acquisition and processing, testing and validation of AI models, Intellectual Property and dissemination costs. All costs must directly support the development, deployment or commercialization of AI solutions.

Because Scale AI funds large projects, the lead applicant typically needs at least $2M in annual revenue. If your revenue is lower, you can still participate; Scale AI pays your customer directly, and you invoice the customer.

Scale AI favours multi-partner collaborations. Strong participant profiles include: AI adopters, AI product providers, academic sector, AI service providers and strategic consultants. So, call up your professor to play an advisory role, collaborate with software development companies, forecast module and dataset developers, find contractors, suppliers and paying customers. Bonus: Hire an Intellectual Property (IP) service provider as IP creation is a major focus of Scale AI.

Case studies

  1. Avianor Received $1.2M to partner with Vooban to integrate AI modules into its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for aircraft maintenance.
  2. Coveo, in partnership with IVADO labs and other associated partners received $4.5M to develop AI systems enabling personalized and intuitive shopping experiences.

Avianor’s was an adoption project involving one customer while Coveo’s a commercialization project with broad market applicability. Both projects featured multiple collaborators, at least one SME, and clear real-world impact. See here for a full list of projects that Scale AI is investing in.

Where should you start?

If you think your organization may qualify for Scale AI funding, begin with:

  1. Joining the Scale AI community
  2. Registering for webinars
  3. Attending networking events to find partners
  4. Completing the online project submission form.

The initial application is typically 10-15 pages, outlining the project, partners and expected outcomes. Approval of the initial application grants a high likelihood of receiving funding.

After initial eligibility confirmation, you’ll prepare a detailed project proposal. This is evaluated by subject-matter experts including academic reviewers for technical and commercial viability. The application process typically takes 2–4 months.

Scale AI values applicants’ time and expects the same in return. Apply only if you meet the eligibility criteria and can demonstrate real-world impact.

Conclusion

Scale AI is a powerful pathway for funding AI adoption and commercialization in Canada, but success depends on meeting its eligibility criteria and delivering real-world impact. If your project aligns with Scale AI’s focus on collaborative innovation, this program can provide substantial support.
