Strength in numbers: CanExport Associations is now open for funding

By Dona Anderson

The Canadian government offers various export funding programs to support businesses in entering and expanding into international markets. As part of the CanExport funding program, the CanExport Associations stream is now open for applications until January 6, 2026. Eligible projects must take place between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027. For your organization to secure funding you must meet the program requirements.

Background

Global Affairs Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service runs CanExport, a funding program which helps Canadian businesses expand into new international markets. There are sub-programs for different sizes of companies including the CanExport Innovation program.

Canada’s global trade ambitions rely not only on individual companies but also on the collective strength of industry associations. The CanExport Associations program empowers national industry or trade organizations to pursue international business development (IBD) initiatives that benefit entire sectors, helping Canadian industries expand their reach and diversify markets.

Funding Snapshot

  • Up to $500,000 per year to cover up to 50% of eligible costs; 75% for defence and security projects
  • Minimum request of $20,000
  • Stacking limit: 75% maximum Canadian government contribution across all programs
  • Reimbursement only: Applicants must pay upfront and claim after activities are complete.

  • Multi-sectoral organizations with a focused mandate (e.g., Indigenous-owned, women-led, 2SLGBTQI+, or visible minorities).

Organizations fully funded by government, regional groups, registered charities, or those focused on innovation clusters, R&D, or domestic entrepreneurship are not eligible.

Eligible activities

The goal of CanExport Innovations is to expand and diversify Canadian exports. Some examples include:

  • Organizing trade missions abroad or hosting foreign buyer delegations in Canada
  • Participating in international trade shows, conferences, and networking events
  • Export training (e.g., intellectual property protection in foreign markets)
  • Developing international business strategies or market diversification plans.

Funding can be used for travel costs, booth fees, consultant services, advertising and many more. A comprehensive list of eligible expenses can be requested from CanExport Associations.

Eligible Applicants Explained

National industry or trade associations are not-for-profit groups that unite businesses in a sector to advocate for shared interests, provide market intelligence, and create opportunities like trade missions and training. They act as a collective voice, helping members strengthen competitiveness and expand into global markets. Some examples include: Deep Tech Canada, Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC), Restaurants Canada and Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI).

Bilateral chambers of commerce or business councils are also nonprofit organizations dedicated to strengthening economic ties between Canada and a partner country. Examples include Canada-China Business Council (CCBC), Canada-Arab Business Council (CABC) and Canada-Eurasia Chamber of Commerce (CECC).

Multi‑sectoral organizations with a focused mandate are national, not‑for‑profit associations that represent businesses across multiple industries, but with a specific focus on underrepresented groups. Examples include Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada (WEOC), Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Council (CAMSC) and Canadian Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC).

The end goal of CanExport Associations is to build community to achieve strength in numbers in an international stage. There are three options to build your community: 1. Join an existing group, 2. Revive a lapsed group, and 3. Found your own. We encourage you to become a member of an organization that fits your business. If there isn’t one, option #2 or #3 is your best bet. In a later blog post, we will explain the simple process of founding a not‑for‑profit association.

Conclusion

CanExport Associations is more than a funding program. By pooling resources, associations can open doors for SMEs that might otherwise struggle to access international markets. Whether through trade missions, training, or market intelligence, this program helps Canadian sectors scale their collective impact abroad.
